Description:
Benson is a sweet and inquisitive young dog, and absolutely ready to be part of a new family! He may be a little apprehensive around strangers, but will quickly warm up to you and be ready to show - and receive - lots of affection. He loves to put his body next to mine or sit upright as I pet him, and belly rubs and tennis balls are a definite yes! Benson is just an easy dog to love and care for, and fits into a new home [even one with lots of noises around, such as tailgates with undergrads and marching bands playing!] quickly.

Benson loves taking walks, the more the better. He's an active guy! But he still needs to work on his leash manners. His version of a walk is more of a sniff-session: a light jog between trees, plants and leaves - which he's absolutely got to sniff around and pee on. He's a fairly fast walker, but with constant stopping! And since Benson is a strong boy, when he's sniffing something and not interested in walking at the moment, he won't - he'll hold his ground and keep sniffing, and he's not very responsive to encouragement to start walking again. [I'd definitely recommend that his new family utilize LDDR's training to work on these issues, and we're currently working on this as well.]

When he encounters someone walking nearby, he's alert, but only if they pass right next to him will he want to go up and sniff them. But if someone's running by, he'll want to join too! He seems to like or express a positive interest in almost everyone he meets - but walks (read: sniffing and exploring) definitely come first. [If startled, Benson's reaction seems to be caution or to continue walking to stay away from the situation - very rarely does he bark on walks, even when there's lots of action - all the cars, people, dogs and more - going on around him].

So far, Benson isn't very reactive or aggressive to dogs and other animals. Occasionally he'll pull on his leash when he sees another dog walking across the street to try to get closer, which I won't allow, but usually he just stands still and alert and looks for a minute or so, and then continues on his way. [I know he lived with another dog at his previous home without any issues, but here at his new foster home he's the only non-human in the house. My upstairs neighbors have dogs, and he'll pay attention when he hears them coming home, but only rarely does it seem to bother him. And when we're outside, even when another dog is pulling and panting and trying its hardest to get to him, Benson hasn't barked.]

However, it's a little bit different with squirrels and rabbits: while sometimes he can distract himself, other times he really wants to chase them! [And since I live in downtown Ann Arbor, none of the squirrels are very scared - so they tend to stand their ground or even tease him a bit too.] Once they are out of his sight, though, Benson is quickly back to his normal routine - sniffing everything. So his new family will need to keep a good grip on his leash, and stay aware of his surroundings when walking around: he's good at spotting squirrels and other interesting creatures, usually before I do!

Benson is a great dog to have around the house. He's affectionate and sweet, but he'll give you space and won't bother you constantly either. And the only time he whines is when I get home after being gone for some time: otherwise, he might follow you around if he's really itching to go outside and pee! He has a fairly deep bark [he's definitely a boxer!], and will use it when he's not comfortable or apprehensive about noises he's hearing from outside. This seems to be subsiding very quickly however; now, he will just occasionally bark when someone is directly outside the window or right at the door. [The minute he sees me come in, however, this stops immediately and he is all excitement - it's really adorable!] I live in a high noise and high density area, and he's adapted quickly.

Benson doesn't have a problem eating his entire bowl, and he doesn't guard or become defensive around his food at all. [Since I don't have any other animals in my home, I'm not sure if this will change with others in the home, but he's so friendly and sweet I don't think it will. I've taken his water to refill it while he's eating, and he doesn't mind at all.] However, when he gets a treat, he'll hurry to the other room to eat it by himself - preferably on my exercise mat, so he can lick up the crumbs after. He is house-trained and doesn't slobber (even when he licks!) - but like most dogs, he does shed. [He doesn't mind being brushed, and I hope to give him a bath in the next few days, and can let you know how that goes!]

Benson isn't a beggar: he'll come close as I'm preparing food and eating and maybe sniff a bit, but there's no whining, jumping, or actively reaching for the food. He's not much of a jumper at all actually. He also knows not to go where he's not allowed [I've allowed him on the couches, but not on my bed, and he's respected that boundary without any issues so far]. Benson also doesn't seem like a runner - I'm careful when I open the door, but he doesn't try to sneak past me either. He has learned very quickly when I'm getting ready to give him a walk [in which case he'll get himself ready by the door] and when I'm just headed to school and he's got to stay at home [in which case he might watch me, but not try to get close to the door] - he's definitely a smart one! Benson hasn't had any issues destroying clothing or items of mine: he's got plenty of stuff - shoes, toiletries, clothing and books - within easy reach at my house, but at most he'll just sniff and then move on. He does snore a bit, though it's only audible if you're sitting right next to him! [Check out the short video of him snuggling on the couch with me after a long walk!!]

If you want more information on Benson, please feel free to reach out to me: my name is Maya, and my email is efrati(at)umich(dot)edu. I'd be happy to answer any questions - and I'm sure Benson would love to meet you too!

Last Day Dog Rescue now microchips all dogs before adoption. AVID Microchips are implanted between the dog's shoulder blades and are a permanent form of identification. The microchips are registered to Last Day Dog Rescue with the adopter's info added once adopted. If the dog is ever lost and slips his/her collar/tags the microchip allows the finder to know who to contact if scanned for a microchip. Dogs MUST still have a collar with tags on at all times. Per our contract, we take all our dogs back if for any reason you can't keep your adopted dog.

The petfinder.com system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable so for most of the dogs we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label.
