Description:
Smiley is a well-adjusted, happy fellow. He has such fine reddish fur that is handsomely interspersed with gray, but don’t let the gray fool you. He’s got plenty of happy energy and heaps of personality. He’ll dive to the ground at little or no provocation and flail his legs in the air in a shameless attempt to get you to scratch his belly. We were struck with the natural personality of this distinguished cavalier. Smiley acts like a dog on holiday instead of a dog looking for a home. Smiley is VERY food motivated, he loves treats but needs reminders to take them gently and we are still working on this so giving him treats in an open palm would be best.  Smiley can be very stealthy when it comes to food and counter surfing.  Yes, he can do this right in front of me and sometimes I do not hear it.  He had reminded me on numerous occasions to keep my counters free of edibles.  Smiley is learning that when I am in the kitchen cooking he should not be.  He is doing very well with this but will need continued instruction.   Smiley is housetrained, does well on a lead, and likes to play fetch for short periods. Smiley is crate trained but prefers the door be left open.  In a closed crate he does bark at other dogs, I do not put him in the crate unless he is persistently looking for food while I am cooking.

Smiley does very well in my house with other dogs, I have seniors here so maybe he thrives with low energy?  Smiley was with another foster who reported he did not get along with her dog, possibly it was a personality issue or too much young energy?  I am not sure but, if you have another dog, I would require that the dogs meet before any adoption took place.  I have found that Smiley is a bone hoarder and will growl at other dogs if he has a bone.  This problem has been solved by taking away all the bones.

All in all Smiley is a goofy, lovely dog who would like a place to chill and to go for daily walks.  I would not recommend small children as Smiley will, and has, knocked me over being such a big goof- he would most likely knock over smaller kids as well.

Last Day Dog Rescue now microchips all dogs before adoption. AVID Microchips are implanted between the dog's shoulder blades and are a permanent form of identification. The microchips are registered to Last Day Dog Rescue with the adopter's info added once adopted. If the dog is ever lost and slips his/her collar/tags the microchip allows the finder to know who to contact if scanned for a microchip. Dogs MUST still have a collar with tags on at all times. Per our contract, we take all our dogs back if for any reason you can't keep your adopted dog.

The petfinder.com system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable so for most of the dogs we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label.
